The cast on seems to be of concern to some people. ย There are many options when casting on for any project, and the BeeKeeper’s Quilt is no different.
I started with a long tail cast on onto a DPN, and then transferring it to my circular needle. It ended up feeling like the cast on was taking up way too much of my precious hexapuff knitting time. ย So I started experimenting with using a long tail cast on over two needles, so that transfer would be unnecessary.
Works pretty well for me, I hope it assists someone out there in knittingland ๐
This is a wonderful cast on! I’ve never seen it done this way. I tried several cast on methods too, ended up using a variation on JMCO but I like the way your bottom edge looks. This was a huge help to me considering the number of puffs I’ll be making! Thank you for putting the time into making the video!
Thanks! I got so tired of transferring the cast on that I just HAD to work out an easier way ๐
You just saved my life with this post! ๐
Brilliant! This will be from now on my puff cast on. Thank you!
So clever!
thank you so much! I have never been able to work out how to do this cast on anyway, let alone over two needles. You have just transformed my puffing!
Thanks for this! The cast was quite time-consuming but this is superb! ๐
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you!
Hey, this is a wonderfully great way to co for our hexie puffs.
You’re a dear to share ! ! !
Wow! I love you! Thank you for saving me a TON of time with the somewhat fiddly cast on from the original pattern. Cheers!
Thank you so much! Just think how many hours you have saved knitters around the world!
I’m a hexipuff newb so I can’t figure out what your hands are doing at the beginning of the video – how the wool is positioned across your left hand and which way you loop the needle when it dips out of shot at the beginning. Help!
The cast on is just a variation on the standard long tail cast on. So the yarn is being held the same way. I haven’t done any tutorials on this as there are so many great ones on you tube already ๐ .
Clever!!! Thank you for posting a video!! Transferring the needles was sucking up my time!

Just finished my second hexipuff and I am hooked! I discovered the Beekeeper’s Quilt a few days ago! Your cast on is great! I will continue to use it. I am having problems with the bindoff though! My last corner is all stretched out! Any ideas on how to make it look better? THX! PS ~ Happy New Year!
I’m so glad the tutorial helped! I do have a way to make my hexipuffs less cornery, so I’ll work on a tutorial for that and get it up real soon ๐
This tutorial is AWESOME! I’m 17 hexapuffs in and I’m so glad I’ve learned this new trick. I was feeling just like you about precious knitting time going towards the silly cast on. Thank you! I have found than in general, all six sides of my hexes are a little different length, sometimes making the shape look a little more round than a hexagon. Do you have the same experience?
Sometimes. I try not to pull too tight on my increases, though, which is helping.
Thank you, thank you so much! I was using a DPN to transfer stitches to my circular and hating life…this is so much faster! You are awesome, so clever, and so kind to share! Thanks again! : )
Thank you very much for this. You are my new knitting hero! Cheers
This is awesome! and SO easy. Great video! I was getting super tired of transferring the stitches as instructed by the pattern. Thanks for sharing!
I really enjoyed your video on the improved cast on for the hexipuffs. I am also having trouble with the sloppy last corner of the bind off. It has been the most frustrating part of making the hexipuffs. Is your video up yet? If not, I hope you are still planning to do it.
Thanks for your help!
Glad you liked it! I plan on doing quite a few videos over the coming months. The sloppy last stitch is certainly one of them. Good thing is, it can be used for all binding off, not just the Hexapuffs!
Thank you so much for posting this! I was really struggling with the original cast on from the pattern, but this is so easy!
Haven’t even talked about it in my blog yet, but getting ready to dive into this crazy project, and I was wondering how I was going to cast on… THANKS! for a great video tutorial! I can’t wait to give this a try…
Bless you for this! Saved me from quitting after doing the original cast on once!
